Weight Loss: A Multidisciplinary Approach
Spring into Action: Checking In on Your Weight and Health
With the sun shining again, now is the perfect time to step on the scales and check if winter’s cooler months have brought any unwanted weight gain.
While not a perfect measure on an individual level, calculating your Body Mass Index (BMI) can provide a general idea of whether you’re within a healthy weight range. BMI is determined using the formula: weight (kg) ÷ height (m²). For example, if Sally weighs 82 kg and is 1.65m tall, her BMI is calculated as 82 ÷ 2.7225 = 30.1. Many online calculators can help with this, or you can ask our nurses and doctors for assistance. Generally, Australian adults should aim for a BMI between 20 and 25, though factors like age and cultural background can influence this range.
The Big Benefits of Even Small Weight Loss
Losing even a little weight can significantly improve your health, including:
✔ Lowering blood pressure and improving blood sugar control – reducing the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
✔ Enhancing fertility – increasing the chances of ovulation and conception.
✔ Better sleep quality – easing sleep apnoea, leading to more restful nights.
✔ Reducing joint strain – decreasing the risk of osteoarthritis and joint pain.
Rethinking Weight Loss: Beyond "Eat Less, Move More"
Over the past decade, our understanding of weight regulation has evolved dramatically, particularly regarding the role of hormones, genetics, and metabolism. While exercise remains essential for overall health, the old advice to simply "eat less and move more" is outdated.
Today, a multidisciplinary approach is key to long-term success. Support from dietitians, psychologists, exercise physiologists, nurses, and your GP can help create sustainable lifestyle changes. Additionally, there are now effective medical treatments available, including medications that aid in weight management and surgical options for those who need them.
